Senon Williams

Holy County Line

PRJCTLA is pleased to present Los Angeles-based Senon Williams in the gallery's first solo exhibition for the multidisciplinary artist. Williams often works with words in his art blending text with delicately rendered landscapes and abstractions in paintings on canvas and works on paper. He also uses words in his 3-dimensional works which vary from sculptural benches to pseudo books made from found wood.

In Holy County Line Willams presents a mixture of paintings, works on paper and sculptures. The blend of these works is very important to the exhibition as it leads the viewer through a journey of artwork that not only presents a written narrative but also a path that deepens the story visually through a myriad of colors, textures and surfaces. WIlliams’ use of words in his artwork serve more than one purpose. In his sculptural works the text serves both as a narrative and as a structural element again altering the narrative visually and through the context of the words themselves.

Wlliams’ paintings capture the light of Los Angeles containing a quality of hope and possibility. His fluid gestures are countered by the more deliberative statements in text. This interplay creates dynamic moments for freedom and structure. One element playing off the other much like in a musical performance.

PRJCTLA Williams’ sculptural works are mostly made from scratch but often appear as existing objects. Benches, chess sets, and books are reproduced with added words. He integrates these elements into sculptural forms where the dynamic interplay of the elements create an artwork with multiple layers of meaning.

Native to Los Angeles, Williams is a lifelong visual artist and musician. His longtime study of economy with words and multiple meanings centers on the desire to create glimpses into the inherent human struggle, both ancient and contemporary. “To provoke thought, a question works better than answers. I enjoy to start a story I resolve in different ways depending on my mood,” says Williams. With imagery ranging from stark silhouettes to lush landscapes and human forms staged in undetermined acts of hope, his pairing of words and imagery suggest deeper meaning.
